After one year, the massive open online course (MOOC) “Geopolítica y gobernanza: riesgos y oportunidades” [“Geopolitics and Global Governance: Risks and Opportunities”], offered by ESADE and Homuork on the online training platform Coursera, has more than 11,000 students enrolled and a total of nearly 8,000 who have ultimately started the course. With these figures, the programme – which is taught in Spanish – has emerged as one of the most successful courses offered on Coursera this year. ESADEgeo President Javier Solana, the director of the course, commented: “In this MOOC, we offer a practical – not theoretical – vision of how today’s world operates. The participants have understood and appreciated this approach.”

The MOOC also boasts other quality indicators that set it apart, including a high completion rate. A total of 818 students – or 12% of the total enrolled – have completed the programme. This figure is four times the 3% average for online training offered through Coursera. As for qualitative parameters, after its first year the course has been “liked” by 99% of users and has an overall participant rating of 4.8 out of 5.

“The response from students shows that, with this MOOC, we have fulfilled our objective of providing a comprehensive vision of the actors on the geopolitical stage and the relationships between them,” commented Dr. Solana. “The content of this course is appropriate, timely and focused on identifying the impact of geopolitics on the ground. The result of the US Presidential election and the unfolding conflicts in the Middle East, for example, demonstrate the enduring relevance of this content.”

A strategic alliance

The “Geopolitics and Global Governance” course was the first result of ESADE’s strategic alliance with Homuork and Coursera to advance the digital transformation of the business school’s educational content and expand the user base of the online training platform throughout the world.

On the heels of this first experience, ESADE and Homuork have extended their collaboration with a new programme, “Family Businesses: Management, Direction and Succession”, which reviews the peculiarities of managing a family business in three specialised courses.
